Kutná Hora and the bone church: what a day actually includes

Most people come for the ossuary in Sedlec. It is short, it is powerful and it is worth it. The mistake is driving back to Prague without seeing Kutná Hora itself.

The main station sits next to Sedlec. The centre and St Barbara's Cathedral need a walk, a local bus or a car. In 2026 travellers still get off the train, photograph the bones and climb back on board feeling that they have seen the place.

A proper day looks like this: Sedlec, then the town, then St Barbara. In a private car it is one continuous route. By train it is an exercise.

What you see in Sedlec

The ossuary is a small underground space decorated with the bones of some forty thousand people: a chandelier, a noble coat of arms, pyramids and inscriptions. The story starts with the Black Death and the Hussite wars, when the monastery cemetery could not cope. In the nineteenth century a woodcarver named Rint was given the job of arranging the bones, and this is what emerged. The visit itself is short, twenty to forty minutes, and its effect is much longer.

The cathedral nobody expects

St Barbara's Cathedral, at the other end of town, is the surprise of the day. High gothic with net vaulting, built with silver miners' money by people determined to prove their town was no lesser than Prague. Beside it is a terrace over the valley, and inside there are details that show the trade: miners in the paintings, tools, and guild emblems.

The station trap

Kutná Hora's main railway station sits next to Sedlec, not in the historic centre. The walk between them is long and unpleasant, and the shuttle does not always match the trains. Hence the familiar frustration: people see the ossuary, check the clock and skip the town. In a car the issue does not exist, because five minutes of driving joins the two ends.

Tickets, photography and hours

There is a combined ticket covering Sedlec, St Barbara and the church of Our Lady in Sedlec, and it usually pays off. Photography inside the ossuary has a separate arrangement, and the rules are updated from time to time. In winter opening hours shorten, so the order of the day is planned in advance rather than improvised at the gate.

Children and squeamishness

This is worth deciding before you arrive rather than at the entrance. Some children find the place fascinating; others are genuinely disturbed by it. There is no problem skipping Sedlec and staying with the town, the cathedral and the silver museum, where you descend into a real mine in a helmet. It is still a full day, and without a struggle.
