The sensible one-day destination from Prague
Kutná Hora is about an hour from Prague, and inside that day sit two places people remember for years. The first is the Sedlec Ossuary, a small unsettling space where the decorations are made from the bones of thousands of people. The second is St Barbara's Cathedral, high gothic built on silver mined right here. Between them lies an entire UNESCO-listed old town that most visitors never reach.
At its height, in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, Kutná Hora was among the richest places in Europe. The coin struck here circulated across half the continent, and the town rivalled Prague. Then the silver ran out and the place froze. That is exactly what makes it interesting: it looks like a major city that time stopped inside.
The trap almost everyone falls into
The main railway station sits next to Sedlec at one end, and the historic centre is at the other. The walk between them is unpleasant, particularly in heat or rain, and the shuttle does not always line up with train times. The result is familiar: people arrive by train, see the ossuary, check the clock and decide to skip the town. They go back to Prague with half an experience.
In a van that problem disappears. We park right beside Sedlec, then drive five minutes to the centre. The same day covers both sites, the square, the silver museum if you want it, and lunch, and still gets you back to Prague early.
What to choose if time is short
- Sedlec and the cathedral only: about four and a half to five hours door to door. A very comfortable day.
- Adding the silver museum: a guided descent into a mine with a helmet, gripping for teenagers and adults. It adds around ninety minutes and needs a slot booked ahead.
- Skipping Sedlec: a legitimate choice with young children or anyone who would rather not. The town and the cathedral carry the day on their own.
When to come
In the morning, always. Between eleven and three the groups arrive from Prague and the ossuary gets tight. In winter opening hours shorten, so the order is planned in advance; in spring and autumn this is probably the most comfortable day in the whole region: cool, quiet, and every bit as impressive as in summer.

Leave Prague
Hotel pickup in the morning. The drive east is short, about an hour, and on the way you get the background: how silver made a small town one of the richest in Europe, and why it stopped.

Sedlec and the ossuary
We park right beside it. The ossuary is a small space where every decoration is made from the bones of thousands of people, and the commentary puts that in historical context rather than leaving it as a shock attraction. Anyone who prefers to wait outside, waits.

St Barbara’s Cathedral
We drive to the historic centre. The cathedral was built with miners’ money, and its gothic detail surprises even people who have seen cathedrals across Europe. Beside it is an open view over the valley.

Town, silver and lunch
The small square, the Stone House, and the silver museum for anyone who wants to go down a real mine in a helmet. In the middle we stop to eat somewhere local, not in the row of stalls by the car park.

An early return to Prague
We head back in the afternoon, which leaves you a full evening in Prague. That is what makes Kutná Hora such a comfortable day: you see a lot and you do not arrive back wrecked.
